Working on Making Disposable Items Made of Food

It looks like in the future our disposable cups, plates, forks and packaging materials will be made from food. These new products, which are still being worked on, are made of corn, rice husks, mushrooms and agar. They are less harmful to the environment and can break down into nothing.

Some of the companies working on these items are: Ecovaties Ecocradle – made of rice husks and mushroom roots, which will hopefully replace Styrofoam. The Way We See the World is working on agar made edible drinking glasses.

National Georgraphics and Global Scan’s Consumer Greendex Measures How Green we Really Are

We all want to help the planet and be green but do we rally know how green we all are?

National Geographic and Globe Scan have been tracking our environmental, sustainable consumption for 3 years now in the “Greendex 2010: Consumer Choice and the Environment – A Worldwide Tracking Survey”. This was made to give everyone worldwide an idea of how companies and people all over the world are promoting environmentally sustainable consumption.

The study includes 17 countries and 17,000 consumers and is increasing every year. What was used in determining the consumptions were the following: food sources, transportation choices, use of green products and attitude and knowledge of environmental issues.

The top scoring countries of 2010 in descending order are India, Brazil and China. Sadly Americans still rank as one of the least and sustainable of all countries surveyed so hopefully this will be changing in the future.

Some of the fashion companies that are using natural fibers, which are grown without pesticides and toxic materials, are growing rapidly. Their main goal being that they want to preserve the health of humans and our environment.

Here are some of the companies that are doing this now:

- Beau Soleil uses bamboo fabrics and vegetable dyed organic cotton. And their philosophy is to use only fair trade labor practices.
- Junky Styling has all recycled clothes not to mention well-paid employees who work in a clean and recycled environment.

Tweens Helping with the Planet and Going Green

When you educate the youth about environmental issues, they pay attention, become involved and make huge changes and right away.

A survey conducted on more than 1,200 youths from the ages of 11 thru 13 stated that 92% said they were very or somewhat concerned about the environment they live in.

And just to prove how powerful an example tweens are, Florida’s Edgewater Boys and Girls Torch Club was named the winner of “Be Great. Be Green” National Project Award. This award goes to the club that motivates, educates and raises awareness about environmental issues. Congratulations to the Tweens in this club.

FreshDirect Expanding to more Cities

The New York-based online grocer FreshDirect is planning on expanding in Baltimore and Washington. FreshDirect, founded more than a decade ago, plans to raise as much as $200 million to expand and has had a 20% sales growth this past year in the tri-state area lone.

FreshDirect Inc. has operations in the five boroughs of New York, Connecticut and parts of New Jersey. And because of its huge popularity is working towards expanding in a number of different areas.

Nissan Delivers the new “LEAF” 100% Electric Car

The new Nissan LEAF runs on 100% electricity and is about to transform the auto industry and how people drive.

The Nissan LEAF is also a milestone for the EV Project, a program funded by a grant from the U.S. Dept. of Energy and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging Company ECOtality. The LEAF is the first in the state of Arizona to participate in the project.

Nissan is committed to improving the environment under their Nissan Green Program 2010 and is recognized as a 2010 Energy Star Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Cold Weather Effects on Florida Manatees

Last winter cold weather killed endangered manatees in Florida at a record rate. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commissions Research Institute 699 manatees died during 2010 alone. Sadly most were attributed to the cold weather.

Manatees are protected by the Endangered Species Act and a survey states that there are only about 5,000 manatees left in the Florida waters.

Florida also has laws regarding motor boats to keep their speed low to avoid manatees accidents.
